WebVioxx Recalls. Vioxx, a once popular painkiller for conditions characterized by chronic pain, was fully recalled in 2004. It has not been on the market since, and although it was a voluntary recall by manufacturer Merck, the drug was bound to be pulled eventually whether through the company or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. WebUnlike traditional NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors work in a different way to control inflammation and pain. COX-2 inhibitors are as effective as other NSAIDs at reducing pain and inflammation. However, they cause fewer stomach and intestinal problems, such as bleeding and ulcers. Only one COX-2 inhibitor is available in the U.S., celecoxib (Celebrex).
