It is most certainly NOT impossible to co-witness a red dot on a Mini-14. But it's tricky. Most optics on most rails are too tall. But I've found a combination that works.
WebI installed a Tech Sight in my 580 series Mini 14 in about 20-30 minutes. It mounts via the same threaded hole as the factory sight, so no drilling or tapping is necessary.
